TOWN DEFEAT WESTERN. MATCH AT RIVERTON. MANY CLOSE GAMES. Although Town beat Western by 18 sets to 6 at the Riverton Club’s courts on Saturday, the contest wag. much more closely fought than the sets totals indicate. No fewer than eight of the' 24 matches were won by the smallest possible margin, and the games total was only 185 to 145 in Town’s flavour. If, however, Western’ s defeat was less crushing than would at first sight appear, the display of the Town players was most creditable, for it was anticipated that, with th e best twelve away in Gore, the team playing at Riverton would have to work hard to win. It was a most enjoyable match, with conditions ideal for tennis.

The Town women lost only one single, Mrs Malcolm breaking the ice for Western. Western fared even worse in the men’s singles, all of which they lost. But three went to the seventeenth and on© to the sixteenth game, the Town men having to exert themselves to the utmost. The pendulum swung the other way in the men’s doubles, two of which went to Western after exciting struggles Western won tbe top women’s doubles and captured two of th© mixed in which there again were many close matches. The Western team felt the absence of Mis s Kelly, Banks and Higgins. Details, with Town names first mentioned, were ; —Women’s .Singles. — Miss J. Kelly v Mrs Cappie 7—l.
