WALLACE COUNTY COUNCIL.

The following business was transacted at the Council meeting on Friday after we went to press: With reference to the Te AnanMossburn road mentioned in the Engineer’s report, Cr. Dyer said that he had asked the Lauds and Tourist Departments to give £2OO each towards the work. So far no reply had been received. The season being very dry the tourist traffic had been extraordinary, as many as 90‘ persons staying at Te Anau on one night. Thework required .was not for the good of the ratepayers, but for the tourists. These lakes were the best in New Zealand, and, for that matter, may not be surpassed by any in the world, and the Tourist Department should provide a fair amount of the cost.—lt was, decided that Or. Dyer and the County Clerk forward letters to the Departments concerned. Cr Buckingham reported that the matter of Messrs Matlueson’s and Morton’s ditch had been hung up indefinitely. £IOO was voted the Invercargill Committee towards expenses in connection with the visit of the Prince of Wales. It was also decided to provide a banner, the matter being left to the Chairman and Clerk to arrange. Or. Buckingham moved in accordance with his notice of motion that the motion that the Council pay the royalty on gravel be rescinded. Many ratepayers had taken advantage of the position to charge the exorbitant price of 1/- per yard for gravel.—Cr. Dyer considered the Council should open gravel pits in different places throughout the county, and arrange to supply the gravel at a smiall price. —Cr. McGregor said that if ratepayers charged too much for gravel that the land should be taken frolmi them under the Public Works Act.—The motion was carried.
