THE CUSTOMS REMISSIONS
SCHEDULE OP NEW DUTIES. Wellington, Aug. 29. Resolutions were adopted by the House of Representatives on the 28th inst., rescinding the tariff alterations of 17tb August, and substituting the following fresh schedule of duties, to take effect on and after Wednesday, the 29th inst, 1 Tea, 2d per lb. Currants and raisins, Id per lb. Candles, Id per lb on packages of reputed weight, and so, in proportion, for packages of greater or less reputed weight. .Cocoa, 3d the lb. Coffee (roasted), 3d the lb. Stearinc, for match-making, id the lb.
Paraffin wax, Id the lb. Matches—wax (plain vestas in cardboard boxes containing under 100 matches), Is the gross of boxes. Pocket vestas, in tin or other boxes containing under 100 matches, Is 4d. Ditto “wax” sportsman’s ovals and No. 4 tin vestas, in boxes containing not more than 200 matches, 4s 6d. Ditto, wax, other kinds, for every 100 matches or fraction thereof contained in one box* 2s 3d—all at per gross of boxes. Patent medicines, £ls per cent. Proprietary medicines and medicaments (1) bearing tbe name of the proprietor on the label or package ; (2) bearing a prefixed name in the possesive case; (3) not otherwise enumerated, prepared by any occult secret or art, £ls per cent. Sarsaparilla, £ls per cent. Drugs and druggists’ sundries, and apothecaries’ wares not otherwise enumerated, £l6 per cent. Chemicals, not otherwise enumerated, including photographic) chemicals and glacial acetic acid (B.P. standard) £ls per cent. Tinctures and medicinal spirit of any recognised pharmacopoeia, containing SO per cent proof spirit or less, £ls per cent. Steam engines and part thereof, including the boiles or boilers therefore, imported specially for mining or goldsaving purposes and processes, or for dairying purposes, £5 per cent. It was also resolved that ou and after the 29th inat. the duties of Customs now charged on the undermentioned goods, wares, and merchandise shall cease. For the purposes of this schedule the expression «• machinery” shall be deemed not to include steam engines or parts of steam engines or steam boilers (land or marine) Kerosene, rice (dressed oa undressed), rice manufactured into starch in bond, salt, coffee (raw), oil, machinery for agricultural purposes, including chaff-cutters, corn-crashers, corn shelters, also articles used in the manufacturing of the same, viz., chaff-cutting knives, tilt rakes, fattings for threshing mills, forgings for ploughs, machinery for dairying purposes, machinery of every description for mining purposes, including machine pumps, but not including machinery for dredging, portablo engines on four or any greater number of wheels, with boiler of locomotive type, also traction engines, liquid chlorine, cyanide of sodium engme governors, all bolts and nuts blank or screwed nuts, black or finished nuts, blowers, welded or flanged boiler furnaces (plain or corrugated), chain
pulleys, blocks of all descriptions, and chains for same, engineers, boilermakers’, brass finishers’, smiths, and all metal and wood workers’ machine and band tools, stool rams, (blocks or finished) or hydraulic cranes or jiggers.
