OTAUTAU SPINSTERS BALL.

From our own correspondent. The'Spinsters. Ball, which was h. in the Town Hall on Wednesday evening last;, proved a thorough suecess, fully 180 couples taking part in the Grand March. From what 1. can learn it is four years since their last ball. Some of those who then took part have since cast in their lot with the Benedicts. ; “ I have never seen since snoh a largo gathering in this bnilding,” was remarked by several, of the company. In fact, there was scarcely room to move, much leas to dance. The evening, as far as the weather was concerned, wasunexceptionably good, which acte d as a strong inducement to tempt people from a long distance, Invercargill, Biverton, Waiau and Fairfax were well represented. The hall was very tastefully decorated with, ferns and flags, and presented a picturesque ap‘ pearahee*'A motto over the hall door, “ United we Stand,” also formed part e£ the decorations. The Spinsters evidently showed that the motto was not without meaning, for that evening at any rate, as they nil combined together and looked very pretty in evening dress. The committee were distinguished by wearing a tri-color ribbon on the left shoulder. The front of the stage was draped with white curtains, which gave it a cozy aspect. Chairs and couches were placed on the stage for the convenience of on-lookers. The supper was served in a large marquee adjoining the hall, the tables groaning with jellies, trifles, fruit salad, and cokesj and were ornamented with seasonable flowers, while there was an abundance of fruit. The repast demonstrated that Otautau can boast of its chefs. The music was supplied by Mrs Blue (paino;, Mr Edward (violin), Mr Glennie (cornet), —all of Invercargill—and was all that could be wished for. The reins were ,in the. capable hands of Miss B. Campbell, wto disposed of the duties of Mi 0. to everyone’s satisfaction Duringtho evening songs were contributed by Mrs Williams and Mr Philp. A cornet eelo by Mr Glennie was well rendered. The dance broke up about 4.30 all thoroughly enjoying themselves, and, like Bobby Burns, coming to the opinion spent were spent amongst the lasses 0 !’ that ‘ the sweetest hours that ere we

On Wednesday last Mr 11. Whittaker of the Utantau Hotel disposed of his propi rty at a satisfactory figure to Mr Nicholas Kelly of the Carriers Arms, Invercargill.
