A meeting of the Committee of the Riverton District High School was hold on Wednesday evening* Present—Messrs George Robertson (Chairman), Eyes, Mcllutcboson and Robinson. A letter was received from tbe Education Board enclosing plans and specifications for outbuildings and renaira at the school. It was resolved that tenders be called for the outbuildings and repairs at the Riverton school. Letter from 0. A. Port with further complaint re the Hoad Teacher’s treatment of his sons Fred and Henry and the Rector’s reply thereto was read. It was resolved, That with regaid to Mr Port’s complaint re his sou Henry against the bondmaslor, the Committee cannot see that after the lapse of time any good could result from an enquiry ; with regard to Fred, looking to tho serious accidents which have resulted from the use of gunpowder and firearms in tho public schools, the Committee are of opinion that the master was justified in taking stringent measures to prevent his scholars bringing them into the school. Tho Committee further hope that Mr Port having ventilated the grievance and drawn the headmaster’s attention thereto, will he satis fiod with the Committee’s action in tho matter and allow the subject to drop.

The opening meeting of the Riverton Mutual Improvement Association took place in the Courthouse on Wednesday evening last. There was a good attendance of members considering the rough night. The President, Mr 11. S. Tarlton, delivered an address on “Capital and Labor,” which was followed by a debate, “ Should the. Government as a State function find work for all needing employment,” the Rev. T. Ncavo taking the affirmative and the President replying. The subjects proved most interesting, and it was found necessary to extend the time of c'osing till half past ten. The debate for next night will be on the subject. “ Should the Legislative Council in New Zealand be abolished?” Affirmative,-Mr McHutcheson ; negative, Mr E. C. Hewut.

A first offender was charged with drunkenness at tho Police Court on Wednesday last and fined 3s 6d, Mr G. Robertson was tho presiding justice. The annual meeting of tbo Wairio Licensing Committee was held at Wairio Hall on Wednesday last Present: Messrs fcs. 11. McDonald (Chairman), John Neylon, Thos. Power and M. Egan. Renewals of all existing licenses were granted, and a new accommodation license was granted to George Bench for tbo Key of the Lakes Hotel. Renewal of license for |Contro Hill Hotel, formerly held by G. Bench, was granted to Thomas Lloyd. The renewal of license to M. Hogan for Commercial Hotel, Wrey’s Bush, was granted on condition that the house bo properly furnished within three mouths.

Tho Oropuki Licensing Committee met cm Tuesday, when renewals were granted for all existing licenses, and permission was given to extinguish outside lights at 10 p.m.

John Sutherland was on Thursday at the Invercargill R M. Court committed for trial at (ho Supreme Court Invercargill for stealing .an overcoat and four tweed suits from the New Zealand Clothing Factory of the value of £lO 17s fid. In tho W.diiagton Divorce Court on Thursday, in tho case Sederland and Goddon v. Godden decree was made absolute.

The Riverton Rifles paraded for Government inspection at the Drillshcd on Thursday evening, when a goodly number were present. After drill Major Acbeson, who acted on account of Major Hannah’s inability to attend, in a few well-chosen remarks, presented Lieut, Robinson with a silver medal for long service and efficiency. Corpl. Forsyth, being the highest aggregate scorer in ihebelt competition matches, w r as presented with the gold medal by Capt. Bridge, It was unanimously decided that Captain Bridge’s application for sis months’ leave of absence be cordially endorsed by the Company. Corpl. Forsyth moved a vote of thanks to Capt. Bridge, for his interest taken in the corps and for the satisfactory manner in which he had commanded the company. This was unanimously carried with acclamation. Capt. Bridge bado goodbye to his men, and the company in return wished him bon voyage. Afterwards, at the Captain’s invitation, the company retired for refreshments.

James Chadwick, the murderer of Roderick Mathesou, met his death in a tragic manner. After committing the deed ho made his way tn a high cliff covered with bush and over looking the scene of the murder, the heme station, and his house. Appearances indicate that ho then got seme flax, and tying one end in a noose round his neck and the other end round a branch of a tree, he sat on the branch while ha smoked a farewell pipe. He then threw himself off. The flax broke, but (be tension had tightened iho noose round his neck ami Chadwick was slowly strangled. The ground around his body shows that there must have been a prolonged struggle before death.

At the Police Court, Invercargill, yesterday, Timothy Regan was committed for trial on a charge of stealing eight crossbred sheep of the va'uo of £5 13s, the property of T, R. Carroll, from a paddock near Rivorsdalo. Bail was al!owod--aocusod in £SOO and two sureties of £250 each.

On Wednesday, Arch. McKinnon, shepherd on Logan’s station, was drowned while crossing the Pomahaka river above Tapanui, Up was in company with Charles McLean who was ahead, and looking back saw one of McKinnon’s dogs swimming on tbo upper side of his horse. It is supposed that the dog got under the horse and that it had thrown McKinnon, as his companion after crossing, saw the horse coming out alone. McKinnon’s body was found on Thursday morning about a mile and a half from the ford. He was a very old resident in the locality and was much respected in the district.

The tender of John and James Walker (£866 17s Gel) for repairs and additions fo the eastern wharf has been accepted by the Bluff Harbor Board. Wo have received a circular from Colonel Bailey, concerning the latest development of ef the Social Wing of the Salvation Army. The central office was opened on Juno Ist, at 18, Manchester street, Christchurch, and comprises three offices, whore files of newspapers are kept, also writing materials, and aceommodrtion for employers and workers to meet for the purpose of completing engagements. Officers have boon appointed to the special charge of the labour department, and they intend to open branches in Dunedin, Wellington, Auckland and Grey month. Every officer is an agent, and correspondents are also to be appointed in every town in the colony. A domestic servants registry is also a branch of the bureau, with a foe of 3s 6.1 to successful applicants.

Judge Donnlston has decided that the members of tho Sydenham Licensing Committee wore legally elected, and could not be unseated.
