FOOTBALL NOTES.
[By Punt.] The preparations for the ball this ...evening are engaging the attention of our local kickists. Yesterday they were to be seen hurrying to and fro, buzzing about from place to place like bo many bees. Judging from the way they are going about their work in the shape of preparation, everything ought to be complete, and footballer’s and their friends mav except “ a ” real “ good night out.” The Invercargill team met a fifteen from Orepuki last Saturday on the Eastern reserve, and scored another victory by 4 points to nil. The ground was in a most sloppy condition, renderr.ing passing and kicking almost an im- ’ possibility. The Orepuki forwards . showed well up and gave their opponents some trouble. In the first spell neither side scored. In the second spell, however, Wright and Twemlow crossed the Orepuki lines, and from one of the tries Galbraith kicked a goal. Messrs Howell and Tapper umpired respectively for Ore puki and Invercargill, and Mr Jos. Wesney acted as referee. In Dunedin last Saturday some very exciting inter ■ club matches were ) played. The Dunedin Club scored an easy victory over the University,! crossing their lines three times, but failed to convert any of the tries into goals. The Saturday before, they scored 5 tries, from which not a single goal was kicked. This club is evidently sorely in need of a reliable goal-kicker. The Pirates suffered defeat at the hands of the Taieri men by 4 points to nil. A very close match between the Kaikorai and Monticello clubs ended in neither sides scoring. The Union Club scored an_ unexpected victory over the Zingari-Eieh-nxond Club by one point to nil. The High School team is evidently weak thiß°season,' They got a severe grubbing from the Dunedin Club the
„ther day, and on Saturday they were again defeated by the Alhambra, who scored 3 points to one scored by their opponents. Latesj advices from Hawke’s Bay state that the Native team will not start on their pilgrimage until the 30th inst., and before leaving Hawke’s Bay will plav two matches at Napier, one on the 23rd and the second on the day they embark for Auckland.
