[Press Association.! Auckland,' Friday At a meeting of the Crown Land Board B. Hesketh, solicitor for Mr Thos. Bussell, announced that as his client has received no compensation for the Waireka Block, he could not allow the Boaid to deal with the land. The Block had been handed over by Grovernment to the Board, or by them handed over to the Grordon settlers. Bishop Luck and several clergymen are passengers by the Eingarooma for the Australian Catholic Confarence. Wellington, Friday. The corvette (Enterprise, which left for New York last evening, brought up in Worsers Bay for the night, but got away again to-day. A dairyman named Allen, residing at Upper Kaivvara, has sustained a serious scaly wound and injuries to his back through the horses which he was driving in his milk cart backed over an embankment 60 feet deep. A deputation of persons interested in mining companies at Terawhiti waited on the Minister of Mines to-day urging the construction of a bridle track to the spot, and guaranteeing oue-fourth of the cost. The deputataion said the following amounts had already been expended in prospecting by the companies named: Albion, L793G; Groldeu Crown, L 5550; Phosnix, L 2761; Caledonia, L7OO ; Groldeu Spur,Lsoo; Wealth of Nations, L 100 0; Success, L 778 ; total, L 19,176. The Hon. Mr Laruach promised that if the local bodies or companies provided oue-third, the Grovernment would be responsible for the remainder. D unedin, Friday.
The amount of L 5 ss, which had been paid to one of the Licensing Committee of the North East Valley, was recovered in the court to-day. The Controller- General had surcharged tho borough with the item, and the bormigh now sued the Commissioner. The Union Steamship Company have received a cablegram from San Francisco announcing that the Oceanic Sleamship Company’s fine new steamer Alameda will leave San Francisco on the 21st Nov., carrying the first mail under the new contract. She will come right through to Auckland and Sydney, calling at Honolulu en route .
