RIVERTON ATHENAEUM.

COMMITTEE MEETING. The Committee met on Thursday, and after passing a few small accounts, the statement of accounts to be submitted to the annual meeting of subscribers was read and approved of. There were present Messrs M‘Donald (president), Eullarton (vice-president), Gr. Eeid, J. Eeid, Petchell, Galloway and Ireland (secretary). The ANNUAL MEETING OF SUBSCRIBERS was held immediately after, at which there was only a bare quorum ; the president occupying the chair. The minutes of the previous annual meeting were read and confirmed. The report and balance sheet for past year as follows, was read and adopted: — Your Committee have pleasure in presenting tiie eleventh annual report and ba'ance sheet. There is a credit balance shown for the first time since the establishment of the institutian. The institution in the first year of its existence was saddled with a debt of £2oo—• valuation paid for building on endowment, now occupied by Mr John Parry. Your committee are now in a position to clear the remaining £IOO of this debt off, the shares we hold in the Building Society having now reached that value. The remaining portion jof endowment at Otaitai has been leased onj favorable terms. On account of the heavy outlay in draining and improving the land, receivable in the meantime is small, but at the expiry of the lease it will be a valuable asset. The improvements on building occupied by Mr Parry are now approaching completion, and are being carried out in a satisfactory manner. Your committee would very much like to see the number of subscribers increased. Now that the institution is free from debt, if there were more subscribers we could get a considerable addition to the library every year, and we would urge upon subscribers£who are in arrears to pay their subscriptions without delay. •'i Balance Sheet to 30th June, 1884.
