CRICKET MATCH.

EIYBRTON v. OREPUKI. [Bx Stumps.] The above clubs met at Orepuki on St. Patrick’s Day, for the third time this season, the other two matches having been drawn. The first match took place on Nov. 6th, at Orepuki, and ended in a draw in-favor of, the Orepukians. The return march took place at Eiverton about Christmas, and resulted in a draw greatly in favor of the Eivertonians. The Orepukians then sent another challenge for a conqueror match, to take place at Orepuki on the above date, which was readily accepted. The Eiverton men left town about 6.45, arriving in Orepuki about 9.30. As is generally the case a lot of time was unnecessarily wasted, play not commencing before 11.30. Mr Mills, the Eiverton captain, having won the toss decided to send his opponents to the wickets. Wilson and Cosgrove therefore commenced the batting for Orepuki against the bowling of Pattieon and Howell. The former had but a very short life, being bowled by Patfcison in his first over. The two next men had also very short lives, the third wicket falling for 6 runs. A good start was now made by Cosgrove and Hirst, the score standing at 23, when the latter had to retire to one of Mills’ slows. With the exception of J. Barry and Stewart none of the other batsman made a’stand. The innings closed for 58. Eiverton commenced their Ist innings by sending Pattison andEaymond to the wickets to the bowling of Wilson and Barry. The former had but a very short live, being caught in’ Barry’s second over. Eeyling, the next man, in was also quickly disposed of, being bowled by Wilson —3 wickets for six runs. A more determined stand was made by the remaining batsmen. The innings eventually closed for 57 or one behind the Orepukians. Two short runs were called by the umpire in this innings, otherwise the Eivertonians would have been one ahead of their opponents. In the second innings of Orepuki the first wicket did not fall before 13 runs had been made, the second and third falling for 14 runs, * A better stand was, however, made by the remaining batsmen, the innings closing for 4G, leaving the Eivertonians 47 to get to win. Time was called when Eiyerton. had lost Four wickets for 17 runs, the match thus ending in a draw in ifavor of Eiverton, and not in a win for Orepuki, as stated by you > in Saturday’s issue. The two captains, Messrs Hirst and Mills, intended to play the match out, and therefore did not make any arrangements to have it decided by the first innings. In the first innings of Orepuki, Cosgrove and Hirst batted well, the former, however, giving several chances. In their second innings Wilson, Cqrrnody. and H. Barry did good service. The fielding of the Orepukians was also very good, especially Hirst as wicket-keeper, and Carmody as longstop. The fielding of the Eivertonians was very loose, especially in the first innings. Howell played a very pretty innings for 5 runs. G. Daniel, W. Hirst, and T. M'Kenzie also did good service. Eaymond was beginning to get set in the second innings when he was run out, the decision of the umpire being, however, extremely doubtful. No particular mention need bo made of the first innings’ bowling. Mills’ slows did the most execution, especially in the second innings, taking two wickets in one over. Howell, Pattison, and Douglas also bowled fairly. Before closing the report I might mention the splendid manner in which Eeyling long-stopped, there only being one bye in each innings. The above match has taught the Eivertonians one lesson, viz., never to travel without an umpire. lam sure the gentlemen who acted as umpires did so to the best of their ability ; nevertheless, there were some very unfair decisions given. « Appended are the scores : OREPUKI.— IST INNINGS.
