A gentleman who left his opera-glasses in a box at Christchurch Theatre Royal when “legs were on,” and had been unable to recover them, concluded an indignant' letter to the manager as follows:—“Apart from the vwral value of these glasses, they cost me L 5.” , \ It is a practice on some New Zealand railways to allow clergymen to ride half fare, 1 and one of the cloth the other day wrote to the manager—not Conyers, of course—asking “if he could .embrace his wife also.”;' Thi.’ manager replied that he thought he could, but he did not want to say positively until he had seen the wire, as he was a' little fastidious in his tastes. The following paragraph from the ‘ Timaru Herald ’ is being extensively circulated: —“ Donald M‘Kay was sentenced for arson at Ternvka at the Supremo Court sessions in June last, and he also was afterwards transferred to the asylum on account of certaiii lunatic symptoms, which showed themselves shortly after his incarceration in the Lyttelton Gaol. On Thursday morning M‘Kay escaped from the Lunatic Asylum, and has not' since been re-captured ” —the ‘Press,’ on the authority of the Chief Gaoler at Lyttelton, states that the above individual is in safe keeping in prison, and up to this date has not manifested the symptoms indicated. With reference to the Timaru breakwater one of the local papers of Friday says : “ We were sorry to notice this morning that the timber on the south side of the large block of cement at the breakwater was, together with the blocks and trusses which supported the tramway, washed away by the heavy sea which was running last night. A goodly number of men were employed* this niorning in rescuing the scattered timber from the surf, and they were very successful in their efforts. It is, however, a pity that the'wofk should be thus further delayed ; rbut, from our knowledge of the contractors, we are sure that it will be very promptly repaired.”
