“WHERE IS SOUTHLAND?"

TO THE EDITOR. Sib, —A so-calle;l “Southland Times’* of last week has just reached me, containing a very curious letter with the avove. healing. Sail letter, I observe, begins with continues with “ we,” toys a hit with “ us*’ and “ our,” and finally finishes . with “I am, &a., -T.C.” The genius that wrote that letter is happily quite oblivious of any little difference between singulars and plurals, and hence his evident ignorance upon the question which lie writes is no matter of wonderment whatever. “ J. C.V admirable contribution to the “ Curiosities of Literature” is less than thirty lines in length, and yet the word “ we” occurs four times, “us twice’, “our” twice, and ‘I”only once. I. need nob tell you the meaning of this—you know a thing or two, you do ! - ' The ,f We:” the “ us,” and tlie ” our” are all really very significant, and smack strongly of the shop-—I beg your par Ion—- “ office” I think the correct wdrdi V Pity *“ J.C.” did not. condescend to enlighten your poor benighted ignorance about the question he started with, viz., “Where, is Sou Milan 1?" ■ I do still say “where?” Strange, indeed,'■that a correspondent signing himself “I am,- &a„ J.C.,”. should assn me the editorial style “ Let us assureour celestial friend of the Weaterniltar,” &a. It is. too plain! . . ;• By-the-hye, I observe the imprint of the Times gravely informs the world at large, in this the year of grace 187.4, that that elegant production is “ Printed and published by . . . at the Times Office. Esk-street, Southland, Now Zealand.” Now, Sir, that ,19. what I .call a regular downright fib. I shall make it my busi-ness,-that I shall, to call at the Registry Office, that I will, and no mistake, and insist upon having it. put “-Invercargill, Otago, New Zealand,” or I’ll know the reason why. I’ll enter an aption, that I will. Everybody knows full well that “ The Times are out of joint';” but, hang it all, they ought, by this time to know that Invercargill win Otago,—-Yours, . C. J.
