ROMAN CATHOLIC AFFAIRS.
(Communicated.) \ A meeting of the Catholics of Riverton ana vicinity, as called by advertisement, was held at the Academy on Passion Sunday. Mr. Cameron read prayers for Mass and preached a magnificent sermon on Grace, in accordance with the Gospel of the day, which was very impressive in its salutary effects on all present. Devotions concluded, he touched upon various topics of interest, and suggested that a Catholic Association should be organised for carrying out measures of utility and importance, as well to the Catholic community here as to their separate brethren ; for whoever docs good to himself, does good to his neighbour. He begged particularly to impress on his hearers that as many in town and country as might find it convenient—male and female, old and young—would do well to meet together every Sunday for prayer and discussion of religious subjects, in which all must be interested. He would also, if time permitted, read to them out the London and Dunedin “ Tablets” articles and intelligence of thrilling interest by the highest authorities, and from the most renowned countries of Christendom—very different from the Penny Readings at the Oddfellows’ Hall. He hoped, therefore, this was but the commencement of a series of reunions, as much could not he transacted at one meeting. The matters for consideration to-day were Peter’s -Pence and school support. The members were unanimous in the resolution to push on with a will the collection for the illustrious prisoner of the Vatican ; nor were they less indignant at the renegades who send their children to schools where they can get but precious little of the faith of St. Augustine or Alfred the Great, St. Columba or Bruce and Wallace, St. Patrick or Brian Boru.
