The Rt. Hon. Sir Francis Bell is seriously ill, states a Wellington Press Association telegram. Mr C. J. AlcKenzie, engineer-in-chief of the; Public Works Depart ment, who has been seriously ill in the Greymouth Public Hospital, is reported to be showing a definite improvement. | Air W. G. Wohlmann, Commissioner of Police, has asked permission to retire after 42 years’ public service, of which more than 41 have been spent as a member of the New Zealand Police Force. Air Wohlmann has just completed a tour of inspection, and on the Alinister’s request will not relinquish his duties until the end of March, after a comprehensive report on the police force has been presented. At a special meeting of the Alasterton Fire Board, Air H. G. Hume, of Wanganui, was appointed to the position of Station Officer at the Masterton Fire Station. The position was rendered vacant through the death of Air C. Clark. Sixteen applications were received. Air Hume, who will take up his new duties on Ist April, joined the Hamilton Fire Brigade in 1924. . In order to gain wider experience in fire fighting Mr Hume went to Australia in 1929, where he secured a position on the Afetropolitan branch of the New South Wales Fire Brigades. During the past six years, he held various positions, both at city and suburban fire station in Australia. He returned to New eZaland towards the end ot last year.
