COAST WEDDING

ROACH—HERBERT. CELEBRATED AT “WAIERUA” One of the prettiest weddings seen on the Coast for many a long day was that of Ina Melita, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Herbert, of “Waierua,” Herbertville, and Nevill George, youngest son of Mrs. and the late, Mr G. F. Roach, of Hastings, which took place on the afternoon of Wednesday last. The intention had been to have the ceremony in the garden, which would have made a very lovely setting but as rain was falling it was held in the drawing-room, the bridal party standing beneath a beautiful floral bell.

The bride, who was given away by her father, looked exceedingly sweet in a very dainty frock of white lace over deep cream crepe de chene, cut on modern lines with train, and long fitting sleeves coming to a point over the hands. The beautiful tulle veil was edged with fine lace and worn back from the face, falling in long lines from a wreath of orange blossoms. She carried a sheaf of cream gladioli and maidenhair fern. Miss Betty Breakwell, cousin of the bride, and Miss Eva Longley attended as bridesmaids, both very attractively frocked in apple green figured georgette made on slim lines, the bodices rucked and trimmed with green velvet with short sleeves ending in a tiny frill and the skirt slightly trained. Pretty head-bands of green velvet, plaited, and green shoes to match, were worn, and each carried a sheaf of pink gladioli. Mr. Percy Cook, of Hastings, and Mr. Vernon Herbert, brother of the bride, were in attendance on the bridegroom. The Rev. Mr. Cameron, of Porangahau, officiated, while at the organ was the bride’s uncle, Mr. E. A. King, who played Mendelssohn’s wedding march and a hymn. The ceremony over, an adjournment was made to a large marquee beautifully decorated with lychopodium and flowers, and here Mr. and Mrs. Herbert entertained some 130 guests gathered from Tinui, Wellington, Napier, Hastings and Feilding. Mrs. Herbert was most tastefully dressed in black wool georgette with black and gold lace sleeves and a shoulder spray of gold flowers, while the bridegroom’s mother wore black relieved with white and carried a bouquet of purple flowers. A delicious afternoon tea was served buffet style and the wedding cake of three tiers made by the bridegroom’s mother was beautifully iced by Mrs. Ralph Hales. The bride’s travelling dress was a navy ensemble with navy hat and shoes and big fur coat, the gift of her parents, and the young couple had a great send-off amid showers of confetti, good wishes, and rain, the latter, however, not being allowed in any way to damp the pleasure of the day, while the good wishes were substantiated by the big array of lovely presents and some useful cheques. The honeymoon is being spent in wandering through the northern part of the island, after which Mr. and Mrs. Roach will settle into their new home at Havelock North.

The wedding guests were later entertained at a dance in the Herbertville Hall, Mr. Les. Anderson’s orchestra supplying the music.
