After the penetration of Shire, the Abjssinians’ attempt to cross the Takkaze at Maitimchet was heavily frustrated and they retreated. A scattered detachment holds Gagab Pass as the key to Selaclaca. The Italians telephoned Aksum for reinforcements and aircraft soon ended the Abyssinian enterprise. An Addis Ababa message states that official circles assert that the Italians have nearly completed the withdrawal from Shire westward of Aksum. The have invested Makale on three sides.
Marshal Eadoglio’s communique announces the defeat of parties of Abyssinians in the Takkaze sector with heavy losses. Six Italians and three Eritreans were killed.
An Addis Ababa message says the Government announces that the troops • of Ras Dedjazmatch Hailu yesterday drove Italian outposts from their positions in the Tembien region near Makale. They captured eleven machine-guns and a quantity of rifles and ammunition.
