An Election “Casualty.”
Rear-Admiral Gordon Campbell, V.C ,is one of the British Election casualties this year, having been torpedoed by a Mr. Burke, for Burnley, with a majority of four thousand odd. Rear-Admiral Campbell was a mystery V.C. of the Great War, for no explanation of his decoration was given until the Armistice, when the facts about Q-Ships were released. *The V.C. was conferred on Campbell for an exploit in the Irish Sea, when his ship was struck by an enemy torpedo. Although holed, he went on luring the enemy submarine to the surface. Panic parties tumbled into boats in assumed terror, and took off from the ship. The U-boat came slowly within range of the hidden guns, and was sunk. Campbell -had just time to save the vessel by beaching her. A few months later, he was promoted commander over the heads of seven hundred lieutenant-com-manders, and captain over the heads of five hundred commanders. He was gazetted rear-admiral on April 5, 1928, and retired next day. In that year he became Naval A.D.C. to the King.
