PLAY AT WAIPUKURAU TO-DAY

OLD BOYS V. TE AUTE

In the Central Hawkes’ Bay Rugby Sub-Union’s senior competition to-day, Old Boys met Te Aute at Central Park, Waipukuru. The teams were: —

Te Aute (red and black): Okeroa, Kihi, Koopu, Kumeroa, Francis, Nicholas, Maako, Rangi, Hirata, Wanoa, Parker, Raureti, Rennie, Porter, Tibble.

Old Boys (white): Frederickson, C. Wilson, Hill, James, Piki, O’Dowd, Sharpin, O'Halloran, Anderson, Reilly, A. Wilson, Coles, Phillips, Bowling, Weatherley. Mr. C. M. Wiliamsbn was the referee. | gj

Old Boys attacked strongly in the opening stages, but a free kick let Te Aute out. Hill intercepted smartly about half-way and got away with a clear field. He seemed sure to score, but attempted to pass out, and Francis intercepted. C. Wilson secured about half-way and made a good run through the opposition, the ball going out in Te Aute’s 25. From the lineout Phillips secured and bullocked his way over. Hill failed to convert. Old Boys 3—Te Aute 0. Old Boys came through again and lined near the corner flag. Te Aute were lucky to force. Piki took a mark in the Red 25, but failed with the kick. Francis secured at halfway and streaked down the line. His pass infield went astray, but the Red forwards carried on the good work, and following a tussle on the line Rennie went over. Koopu failed to add the minor points. Old Boys 3—Te Aute 3. Old Boys regained their lead almost immediately, when the ball was punted over the line and O'Dowd, coming up fast, beat a Te Aute man to the touch down. Hill this time made no mistake with the kick. Old Boys B—Te Ante 3. Scores were coming fast. From a line-out in a handy position Frederickson went over, converting his own try. Old Boys 13 —Te Aute 3. Led by Francis, Te Aute made- a sortie into White territory, but they were quickly repelled. The Old Boys forwards. with Weatherley in the van, turned defence into attack and carried hostilities once more into the Red 25. Hill made a dash, but was downed. Old Boys were still attacking when a free kick eased the situation for Te Aute. ROSS SHIELD MATCH CENTRAL BEAT DANNEVTRKE The semi-final of the primary.. school games for the Ross Shield • was also played at Waipukuran to-day, when Central Hawke’s Bay met and defeated Daunevirke. On the resumption of play Central forwards penetrated the Yellow 25, and from a melee Goodeve snapped up the ball and dived over for a good try. Wilson failed to convert. Central 6 —Dannevirke 3

Moana broke awtay with the ball at his feet, punted through the opposition and followed up fast, with Hunter in support. The latter went over for another try. Wilson converted. Central 11—Dannevirke 3 From the kick-off Central forwards carried the ball right, up to the goalline for ?Tbha to score in the corner. Wilson this time failed to collect. Central 14 —Dannevirke 3 The game ended without further score. Representative Match CANTERBURY v. WELLINGTON The touring Canterbury Rugby team met the Wellington representative fifteen at Athletic Park, Wellington, this afternoon, in dull but fine weather. M r J. S. King is the referee. Wellington won the toss and elected to defend the southern goal. Two spells of 4i) minutes were played. A good passing movement saw Canterbury within the Wellington 25, Dunshea being grounded in the danger zone. Good play, in which Lil-' burne figured carried the- ball to mid-i field. \ From a point inside the 25 yards) line Canterbury failed to goal a penalty award. Wellington attacked strongly and Kilby lined outside Canterbury’s 25 flag. Passing 1 etween Kilby, Lilburne, and Wright, ended with Canterbury rinding 'relief in a force-down.

Dunshea broke away for Canterbury ' and gained much ground. A great run for the Canterbury line, in which Fraser-Smith figured, ended in the defenders forcing the ball in defence. Hatterslev marked a high Wellington kick and the ball went to a point near half-way, Lilburne returning it to the touch-line. McAuliffe and Mortlock were prominent in. an attacking movement but Wells intercepted to good purpose. I Innes carried the ball back to halfway. A nice run by Ball took the play into Canterbury’s territory. Ongley scored for Wellington after 20 minutes’ play. The try was converted.
