MODERN MOTHERS

THE IRRESPONSIBLE TYPE BRITISH DOCTOR’S VIEW LONDON, July 2. A type of modern mother came under severe criticism by a doctor at the National Conference on Maternity and Child Welfare in London. Dr Leslie Hausden, medical officer, John Haddocks Convalescent Home, Basing, said that a vast number of prospective mothers knew as much about a baby as they did about the fourth dimension. He was referring, he said, to the young, care-free and entirely irresponsible type who had been brought up to live very much for the pleasures of the moment, and among such pleasures “falling in love” ranked high. At an early age. and often with little more thought than she would expend in selecting a cigarette,” he continued, “she got herself married. “Newly-born babies are generally so strong and healthy that it only requires some instruction of their mothers to keep them so. The first seeds of illhealth are sown when parents or others meddle with healthy infants.” The Minister of Health. Sir Kingsley Wood, spoke of the steps being taken by the Ministry to investigate the' problem of maternal mortality.
