A GREAT COW

HAWKE’S BAY BRED 511 LBS BUTTERFAT IN 190 DAYS By producing 511,241 b fat in her first 190 days on C.O.R. test this season the 6-year-old pedigree Friesian cow, Paepaetahi Michaelmas Rosebud is almost certain to set a new high mark for butterfat produciton for Hawke’s Bay for the Friesian breed before completing her 365 days on test in October next. Bred and owned by Mr. A. F. Perkins, of Taradale, Hawke's Bay, Paepaetahi Michaelmas Rosebud has amassed her splendid total to date by her monthly yields of: —

Total for 190 days . 13924.1 511.24 Paepaetahi Michaelmas Rosebud’s production must be regarded as being of great merit when it is remembered that during the first four months of her testing period one of the worst droughts for many years was experienced in the Taradale district. To make matters worse Paepaetahi Michaelmas Rosebud would not eat any hard feed and in addition to this she had twin calves which had taken a lot out of her. This is easily understood when it is known that only ten months had elapsed since her pervious calving. In fact Mr Perkins’s cow has been a real breeding machine during the past two years, her last three calving dates being, February 6, 1933, December 14, 1933 and October 22, 1 934, which means she dropped four calves within 201 months. Paepaetahi Michaelmas Rosebud was born on October 10, 1928 and since then has been a consistent performer at the Hawke’s Bay A. and P. Show. At the 1929 show she was second in the yearling heifer class, occupied the same position in the 2- heifer class at the 1930 (Royal) show, and was first in the 3- heifer class and reserve champion at the 1931 show. She was not shown in 1932 and 1933, but was brought out at the 1934 show when she won the mature cow class and the female championship. Commenting on her after awarding her the championship, the judge, Mr. W. A. Kyle, said she was almost a perfect specimen of the breed. t,-~r "T- wnmuu*
