Philosophic Residents
The residents of that part of Christchurch which is on occasions immersed in the flood waters of the Heathcote River, have adopted a philosophic outlook on events of the kind (says the Press). On Saturday afternoon, when the flood water were over the road in front of her door, one vroman found that she had shopping to do. She was well prepared, and went out wearing khaki dungarees and a pair of gumboots. Unluckiest Man A Viennese merchant is described as “The Unluckiest Man.” His father placed his fortune in Austrian war loan and lost everything. The merchant made a fortune from foodstuffs after the Great War. He invested it in German markets. When the inflation occurred he was able to buy a pail of shoes with what remained. Then he effected a huge deal in horses with the Soviet. Difficulties arose, and the case went to arbitration. The Soviet paid the money, but a lawyer disappeared with it.
