AMERICAN VISITOR WEARS JEWELS IN RUSSIA WASHINGTON, Sept. 2. It is now safe for society women to wear jewels in Soviet Russia. A Washington society leader has been there and proved it. “It was a bloodcurdling experience, but I went through with it,” said Mrs. Edward B. M’Lean, on her return from Russia, describing her experience in flaunting the two million—dollar (400,000) Hope diamond in the face of the proletariat of Moscow. “They hated me,” she said, for I stood for all that woman who wear jewels represent. ‘But they were fascinated, and I hope I’ve made it safe from now on for American -women to wear heavy jewels in Russia.” Mrs M’Lean, wife of the millionaire publisher, one of the Capitol’s outstanding .hostesses, was last" in the news when suing for £2OOO a month maintenance charging that her husband had failed to support her and their children. The famous diamond is supposed to be cursed and all of its owners for the last century .have been the victims of bad luck. The great gem was once the proporter of France during the revolution.
