NEED FOR REFORM.

An apologist for the Government, addressing a meeting the other day, ventured the opinion that those who were criticising the Government would do very much worse if they were in power, comments the “Wairarapa Daily* Times” (an Independent-Reform newspaper). It is a very serious admission to make, by a supporter of the Government, that the Government is doing badly, for that is the only construction which can be placed on the remarks of the speaker, who, as he proceeds with his remarks, criticises the Government over its unemployment taxation policy. As we have stated before, Government supporters are finding it very hard to fit in their personal views with those of the Cabinet on the government of this country. Stripped of party obligations, we believe that 90 per cent, of them would vote against the Government on most planks of its policy. Those who have studied the political situation are of opinion that there will be no great easing of taxation until the session before the election. The Government, continuing its piratical policy, will extort the last sixpence out of the taxpayer before the final crash comes. It is the obvious duty of the voters to cast about for candidates who will place the public welfare before party, and who will insist upon obligations being honoured and a reduction in taxation. The present Government has got the Dominion into such a financial muddle that it probably finds it impossible to ease the taxation burden.
