LOWERED PRICES FLUCTUATIONS SINCE 1917-18 In a recent address Mr. W. J. Polson, M.P., president of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, asked his hearers to examine the certified pay-outs of a leading Taranaki dairy company, the Midhurst Company, for the fob lowing years:— per lb. butter-fat. 1917-18 17.82 d., 1919-20 19.21d._ I 1920-21 34.25 d. 1921-22 15.25 d., 1927-28 18.21 d1930- 12.00 d. 1931- 10.75 d. 1932- 7.773 d. 1933- 7d. (approx.)' One .hundred pounds butter-fat equalled approximately 1201bs. butter; therefore the value of one pound of butter in the above butter-fat payout for 1933-34 would be 5.833 of the stated pay-out. A pound of butter was therefore worth in: — per lb. 1917-18 14.85 d. 1919- 16.00 d. 1920- 28.54 d. 1921- 12.70 d. 1927-28 15.17 d. 1930- 10.00 d.. 1931- 8.95 d. 1932- 7.30 d. 1933- 5.83 d. (approx.) The same figures applied to wool. Before the war the price of wool was approximately 1/- per lb., and the average crossbred wool was selling to-day at 6id.
