ADVANCEMENT ASSOCIATION THE ANNUAL MEETING • (From Our Own Correspondent) The annual meeting of the Takapau Advancement Association was held in the Library on Monday night, being presided over by Mr. N. M. Paulsen. Arising out of the minutes the chairman reported on the position of the County Council as to the clearing of blackberry from the streets. The treasurer, Mr. R. S. Askew, submitted his financial statement, which showed that the Soldiers’ Memorial Fund was well in hand and that the Recreation Account had greatly improved its position, after repaying a loan. The secretary, Mr. W. Cuthbertson, reported that much assistance had been received from the Returned Soldiers’ Association and Poppy Fund which had been utilised to improve various institutions in the township. New gates had been erected at the Recreation Ground, the dressingrooms improved, and trees had been cut down, the latter work bringing in revenue to carry out the improvements. The chairman, in the course of his remarks, welcomed Dr. Coutts, also the new bank manager and stationmaster, with others who had come to the district recently. As chairman of the Waipawa County Council he gave a lucid explanation of the work being carried out in the Takapau riding, with the possibility of getting the main street tar-sealed.
Mr. Cuthbertson, on behalf of the Town Hall and Cemetery Trustees, gave a report on their activities and stated that the hall was now out of debt, also that it was their intention to erect a new drop screen as well as complete other repairs. The cemetery had received much attention in the last few months by way of removing unsightly trees, and erecting a new cyclone fence (with rails in front). Within the next few weeks ornamental shrubs would be planted. Officers Elected. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year:—President, Mr. N. M. Paulsen; honorary secretary, Mr. W. Cuthbertson; treasurer, Mr. R. S. Askew; committee, Messrs. J. W. Cato, J. A. Grant, J. Caughley, W. Hobson and A. S. Aldrich. Mr. R. A. Fraser, on behalf of the Football Club, donated £3 to the Recreation Ground Fund to assist in carrying out further improvements. The donation was very thankfully received. Mr. J. W. Cato, on behalf of the business-people traversed much of the work which had been done by a few during the year, and thought the time had arrived when the community should realise its position. He was complimentary as to the work done by the chairman and his election as chairman of the Waipawa County Council. It was decided to leave the arranging of the Anzac service to the officers and committee with the addition of the president and secretary of the local Returned Soldiers’ Association. THE RUGBY SEASON The Takapau Football Club has started to practice and is signing on members and will be able to stage a senior and junior team, but could do with a few more useful forwards to keep up the standard of play. The season opens on Saturday with the seniors playing Waipukurau, at Waipukurau, while the juniors will meet Argyll, at Takapau.
