That Elusive “Thousand.”
When Jack Mills, the New Zealand representative batsman, scored a fine double century for Eden in a club game two weeks ago it seemed certain that he would register his 1000 runs for the season, as he was then within thirteen runs of his objective, and had at least two games in which to play. At North Shore last Saturday he was dismissed without scoring, so that his chances were reduced by half. Even so the left-hander’s prospects of gaining his objective looked rosy, but against Hawke’s Bay at Eden Park he was again unlucky, being dismissed for a “duck.” His figures for his last three innings thus read 203 —o—o,0 —0, and his fourfigure total is still 13 runs away. The same bad luck is dogging H. G. Vivian, of Parnell. Two weeks ago he was within 101 of his “thousand,” and after two innings his position is in no way improved. Against Ponsonby last Saturday he was dismissed before he had scored, and in the match with Hawke’s Bay he followed Mills’ example and failed to open his accoun t.
