A FIELD DAY

OTANE BASKETBALLERS gj ENTERTAIN MANY SPECTATORS (Prom Our Own Correspondent.) A field day was held on the Recreation Ground on Saturday as a wind-up to the basket-ball season, there being a large number of spectators present, they being entertained by the local committee. The first game played was between the senior men and ex-members of the team; this was undoubtedly the best game of the day and resulted in a win for the men by 8 goals to 6. The second contest was between the regular team and a young men’s team, the ladies winning by 5 goals to 2. This would have been a much more even game if the young men had not played so much to the ‘ ‘gallery.”

The third match was between the present team and ex-members, the former winning by 20 goals to 10. The ex-members’ forwards showed much better combination, and with condition should have won but age and increasing weight proved too heavy a handicap.

The fourth combat was betwen the senior and junior men, the boys winning by 2 goals to 1. The ex-football-ers in the team appeared to be the most weary men on the ground. The fifth encounter was between the Waipawa Old Girls team and Otane. The home team scored 10 goals to Waipawa’s 3. There was a very good exhibition of play, and it thoroughly enjoyed by the spectators. The final of the series was between Waipawa ladies and the young men’s team, the boys being ungallant enough to beat their fair opponents! In the evening the players were entertained at a Cinderella dance, in the Town Hail by the Otane team. Music was supplied by Miss Smith and Messrs Bryce, Mundell, and Mills. Mr J. Smith acted as M.C.
