HEALTH OF WINOOKA ATTACK OF LARYNGITIS? SEATTLE, Aug. 16. Mr McDonald, part owner of Winooka, said to-day that the Australian thoroughbred has an attack of laryngitis which will set him back in his training, but the indisposition is not regarded as even bordering on critical. Mr McDonald ridiculed reports in London that the horse was in a serious condition, and added that the ailment was nothing unusual. Horses on virtually all the big tracks bad been experiencing the same trouble. Winooka was out for a walk yesterday. Polson, Winooka’s trainer, said he expected the illness to pass in a few days. “ORDINARY CASE OF COUGHING” SEATTLE, August 17. Published reports that Winooka is suffering from laryngitis is denied by the veterinarian attending the horse. He said that it is an ordinary case of coughing, which is now almost negligible The feeding is nearly normal. Polson expects to start galloping on Friday. SILVER SCORN’S TASK The fact that Silver Scorn is in some quarters fancied for the Caulfield Cup makes it interesting to examine the records of mares in past contests. In the seven victories to the credit of mares the highest weight carried was 8.7, so that Silver Scorn is confronted with a severe task to win with 9.4. This is recognised by the owner, F. T. Cush, who has warned investors that his mare is a doubtful starter. Following is a list of mares who have won the Caulfield Cup:—Blink Bonny, 6 yrs, 7.3; Grace Darling, 6yrs, 7.10; Sweet Nell, 3yrs., 6.13; Marvel Loch, 6yrs., 8.7; Lady Medallist, syrs., 8.5; Wynette, Gyrs., 6.11; Maple, syrs., 8.7. If Silver Scorn wins, it will be the first occasion on which a four-year-old mare has led the field home.
