SECOND EDITION MANY CHARGES
— & Of False Pretences ISSUED 15 VALUELESS CHEQUES COMPANIONS A TOTAL OF NINE (Per Press Association) WELLINGTON, This Day. Twenty-four charges of false pretences were admitted by Henry Arthur Cooper (29), mechanic, before Mr. E. Page, S.M., to-day. It was stated that he was discharged from prison on August 8, of last year, and went to Christchurch where he met three men. They decided to raise money by means of valueless cheques. Accused issued cheques at Christchurch, Tiniaru, Wanganui, Hawera, Patea, Waverley, Wangaehu, Levin and Auckland, the result of his activities being that a total of £lOl 4s 6d in money and £79 4s 2d, in goods was obtained by fraud, of which only £3l Os 1 Id had been recovered. Accused issued fifteen valueless cheques and his companions nine. It was to accused's credit that he obtained employment at freezing works and ceased issuing cheques, and by pleading guilty saved the country the expense of sending him to be tried at all these towns. Mr. Page pointed out that accused had a lengthy list of convictions. He imposed reformative detention, not exceeding three years, on the first charge then convicted and ordered accused to come up for sentence on the others if called upon within three years.
