THIRTEEN SPADES

REMARKABLE BRIDGE HAND CREATES A SENSATION SYDNEY, March 3. A few days ago a great sensation was created among bridge players by the news that a Melbourne player had been dealt 13 Spades in the one hand, and that as his partner took him out of Spades by a bid of seven no trumps, which was doubled, they went down some thousands of points. Sydney naturally objected to the notice that Melbourne had thus obtained, and players have pointed out that, anyway, it was not an orthodox deal but a “goulash” hand, in which almost anything may happen. But Sydney has done better than this, for it has now reported a whole series pt wonderful hands recorded by a little family circle at Vaucluse. They are inveterate bridge players, and about three weeks ago “things began to happen” with or to their cards. In two successive hands the father of the family and his wife were dealt 12 Spades, and the following week the wife held 12 Diamonds. But the climax came a week ago, when one evening the lady dealt her son 13 Hearts. The game was of the regular nature; two packs, not new, were in use; and 1 the cards had been well shuffled. The bidding went to four Hearts, and the recipient of the suit then laid down his hand. But this was not the end of the miracle, for four hands later the daughter of the house, after the cards had been shuffled and cut in the ordinary way, dealt her father the whole 13 Clubs.
