OUT IN THE GARDEN
THE WEEK’S WORK AMONG THE FLOWERS Sow hardy annuals. Take cuttings of Verbenas, Pentstemons, Calceolarias, Marguerites. Give Chrysanthemums a top-dress-ing of rich soil or manure. Plant out Calendulas. Sow early flowering Sweet Peas. Plant Daffodils, Hyacinths, Tulips, Iris. Divide and replant Primroses and Polyanthus. Take Chrysanthemum buds which show from now on. Remove laterals and keep plants securely tied. This applies to both Dahlias and Chrysanthemums. Remove spent blooms from Dahlias. Disbudding will be necessary. Roses give promise of some good autumn flowers. Applications of liquid manure will be beneficial.
THE VEGETABLE PLOT Lift Potatoes when tops have died down. Harvest, onions as soon as ready. T.ift the tops of Kumaras to prevent rooting. Remove lateral growth of Tomatoes. Kumaras are ready for lifting once tubers are a fair size. Weed and thin seedling crops. Earth up Leeks. Pull off-side shoots and short leaves before earthing Celery. Paper wrappers before putting the soil around the plants give much cleaner sticks of Celery. Sow early Cabbage and Cauliflowers. Plant Cabbage to suit requirements. Harvest Beans for shelling -when pods ore chaffy. Keep Dwarf and Runner Beans closely gathered.
THE GREENHOUSE Thoroughly clean the inside woodwork and glass. • Clean under benches and spray -with an insecticide. If plants cannot all be stood outside, stand them to one end and clean one half at, a time. Sow Primula Sinensis, Cyclamen and Cinerarias. Primulas, etc., sown earlier can be pricked off. Shake out. and repot Regal Pelargoniums. Old bulbs of Cyclamen should ‘ he started and repotted. Schizanthus and Alignonctte are useful for winter use under glass. Pot up Frezias, Hyacinths and Tulips. A few baskets of La ehenalias should he made up. Begonias and Gloxinias as they lay over should he gradually dried off. Remove all dead flowers or fallen leaves to prevent undue dampness.
