FLOATING AIRPORT
A SUPPLY-SHIP FOR SOUTH ATLANTIC ROUTE * BERLIN, February 24. The Norddeutscher Lloyd steamer Westfalen, which the Lufthansa Air Company has converted into a fuel station for South Atlantic air traffic, will leave Bremen very soon for preliminary tests in the North Sea. The Westfalen will leave in March for a point in the South Atlantic midway between Africa and Brazil. She will act as a petrol supply ship in the centre of an 1800-mile stretch of water, which aircraft, carrying an economic load, cannot cross in a single hop. The Westfalen is fitted with a canvas landing-stage. The calling aeroplane will taxi on to this, and will be hoisted by a crane on to rails. After refuelling and repairing, the machine will run down the rails, being launched by a catapult. A regular European-South American air mail service will be inaugurated in a few months. Powerful searchlight in the Westfalen will form a beacon for planes at night. The floating aerodrome will contain everything for repairs.
