MURDER CHARGE
AGAINST A N.S.W. BAKER SHOOTING OF A WOMAN SYDNEY, January 20. William Massey Reed (26), baker was charged at the Kogaran Folic* Court to-day with shooting Violei Gorman (24). with intent to murdei her, and was remanded till February o On Mr. May, S.M.. asking why sc long a remand was necessary, the Police Prosecutor said that on the night of aJnuary 17, the woman was with the defendant, who tse.l to keep company with h*-r some years ago, but she was now in hospital with a bullet wound in the left breast and was likely to be there for at least ten days. .Mr. May: Why is he charged with shouting with intent to murder ? That would imply that ne shot at her, but missed. If the shot did not miss her I think tiie charge sl.oiud be one of malicious wounding. It can be altered later. Does he want bail? Police Prosecutor! We oppose bail, as the police are of the opinion that Reed will take his own life if he is allowed out. The girl is not yet out of danger, and the doctors have not located the bullet. Mr. May: Then I cannot allow bail. Reed was escorted to the cells, and his wife, who had been in the court was subsequently allowed to talk to him through the bars of a window opening out in the exercise yard.
