Religion in Russia
Questioned regarding the attitude towards religion in Russia, Major Pharazyn, speaking at Wanganui on a recent evening, said that he had been into a number of churches and seen services going on in the ordinary way, although they were not too well attended. The Soviet's attitude towards religion as a consolation in after life for suffering in this was one of opposition. They were against the, whole idea of “pie in the shy,” saying “We want the pie now and are going to have it.” The speaker did not think they were anti-religious so much as antisuperstitious. They did not make a mockery of the best of religion, but they did show up the Russian priests. “It is difficult to criticise the attitude of the Soviet towards religion because of their reply, which is: •Who are you to criticise us about religion when in your country you repudiate everything that religion implies?’ ’’ said the speaker. “The Big Noise” •'Sunbeam ear —Miss Ethylene, 1000 h.p., 203 miles an hour. Daytona Beach, 1927 —in Stratford!” It is hard to believe but the evidence was convincing. Recently in Broadway a big car, in appearance representing Malcolm Campbell’s Bluebird, or a similar racing giant, attracted largo crowds and for some time was the centre of interest for all and sundry. Further big lettering declared the car to be one of 12 cylinders and proof of this was given in the 12 exhaust pipes protruding at the rear of the body. The car was 22ft. over all, with a wheelbase of 4ft Sin. The driver was called upon to answer a lot of ques j tions, his answers revealing that the car was a "stunt.” The ear was a Sunbeam, but an ordinary chassis with the racing body built on. The ear would do only SO miles an hour not 230’ The "Trocadero” (Napier) is open daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., including Sundays.
