A Sectional Benefit

Farmers taking the cue from the announcement in the Press and elsewhere of the recent rise in the exchange rate brought forward good entries of rape and store lambs for Thursday’s Dannevirke market, states hte “News.” Entries from, the various vendors made ready sales at increased prices of from about 2s, and in some cases, 3s per head on the values current before the rise in the exchange rate. This put quite a feeling of heartiness into the tone of the market and it was more like former times of three years ago to see the farmers wearing such happy expressions. Cattle do not appear to have benefited in any marked way as the prices for beasts offered locally yesterday were in the main no improvement upon the values ruling before the altered rate of exchange. The future of cattle depends largely on what the freezing companies will pay for export, and although ox beef is wanted by some of the companies—at a price—cow beef is dependent entirely upon internal demands for its outlet.
