<♦> FREE LABOURER FINED “There is a lot of feeling between the strikers and the free labourers, said Senior-Sergeant D. J. O’Neill wt the Hastings Afagistrate’s Court, yesterday morning when Albert Ale[\ay appeared before Air A. AL Afowlem, S.M., and pleaded guilty to assaulting William MeKenzie on January 7. The police officer explained that about 5.15 o’clock on the day in question the defendant, in company with some other men walked along Herctaunga Street and passed the complainant ATcTw'nzie. The defendant turned hack and struck AlcTxcnzie who did not. retaliate. When questioned, the defendant said he was a free labourer, and A'lclxcnzie, who was a. striking butcher, made certain abusive remarks and the defendant struck him. The Senior-Sergeant said that AleKenzie was previously fined for assaulting a. free labourer. TTis Honour: What happened to him'’ Senior-Sergeant O'Neill: Ho was fined £5. It was a more serious assault than this. “t don’t know why you men must fight.’’ said His Worship in inflicting a fine of £2.
