OPTIMISTIC OUTLOOK • IN TIMBER BUSINESS WELLINGTON, January 24. The re-absorption. in the timber industry in New Zealand oi between <.>ooo and 4000 hands as a result of the political manipulation of exchange is the confident expectation of authoiities in the industry, who base their anticipations on the increase in demands which have already been received from Australia. One principal, in discussing the outlook. said there was no doubt as to the advantages the timber industry would receive from the increase in the exchange rate. Most encouraging inquiries were now coming to hand from the Commonwealth, and trade generallv was expected to be given an impetus. which would have the effect of absorbing surplus production, keeping the mills busy, and providing for the employment of an increasing number of men. Tf the expectations wore realised, and he had every reason to believe they would be. employment would ultimately be available for up- | wards of 4000 men.
