THE RANFURLY SHIELD Emblematic of Rugby supremacy in New Zealand, the Ranfurly Shield is perhaps the most coveted trophy in the realm of athletic sport in New Zealand. It was first won by Auckland in 1902 and that province again held it from 1905 to 1913. Canterbury were comparatively late into the field with a challenge and it was not until 1910 that the province made an effort to lift the shield. A challenge was entered against Auckland in that year, and a great game saw Auckland retain the Shield by 6 points to 4. From that year on, Canterbury were consistent challengers for the Shield, but it was not until 1927 that they were successful in holding the trophy, which was won from Manawhenua. Later it was won in turn by Waira- : rapa, Southland and Wellington. Canterbury again won the shield last [ year, when they defeated Wellington in an exciting match. No other province has a record in Shield games to equal that of Auckland. They held it from 1905 to 1913 'in an unbroken line of successes. It is noteworthy that Auckland has not been able to win a shield match since losing the trophy to Taranaki in 1913, while another great Rugby Union, Otago, has never become a holder. The holders of the Shield since its presentation are as follow: — Auckland: 1902-04; 1905-13. Wellington: 1904-5, 1914-20, 1921-

22, 1930-31. Taranaki: 1913-14. • Canterbury: 1927-28, 1931-32. I Southland: 1920-21, 1929-30. Hawke's Bay: 1922-27. Wairarapa: 1928-29. Manawhenua: 1927. THE SHIELD MATCH i FORWARDS' MAGNIFICENT WORK Playing a magnificent fighting game, Canterbury staved off Auckland’s challenge for the Ranfurly Shield and claimed victory by 14 points to nil. This result was hardly anticipated in Canterbury, and the element of surprise makes Canterbury's victory all the more gratifying. Both teams gave an attractive display, 1 eeping the ball in the open. It was the wonderful work of the Canterbury forwards that won the match. Although they were beaten for the ball in the majority of the scrums, they broke up smartly and were quickly on to the Auckland backs. In loose rushes, the Canterbury forwards were the better pack, showing fine combination and greater dash than their opponents. Auckland had been reinforced for the match and the team included Corner, Solomon and Bush, as well as several other prominent New Zealand players. Canterbury had also been strengthened. All round the Canterbury forwards were much improved on the pack that played South Canterbury last week. Tire backs also showed vastly improved form and when called upon did their work correctly. The Auckland backs were pretty action but appeared to be a little sta’probably an effect of their strenuous tour. There was a crowd of about 14,000 or 15,000 spectators—a record for this season. Cottrell captained the Canterbury team, and Hadley was skipper of the Auckland side.— “Christchurch Star.”
