TAXI-DRIVER CHARGED

In conjunction with the inquest, the preliminary hearing was continued in the Magistrate's Court of the charge against Paul Olsen Sabo, aged 41, a taxi driver, that while in a state of intoxication he wa in charge of a motor car in Whitn re street and by an act of omission in relation thereto caused the death of William Edwards. Sabo pleaded not guilty and was committed for trial. The inquest was adjourned sine die. Sergeant J. Carmody, who gave evidence yesterday afternoon, stated that he had inspected Sabo's taxi immediately after the accident and found the right-hand mudguard dented and the right-hand front lamp bent out of place. Constable E. G. Trask, who arrested Sabo for drunkenness in charge of a car, said that the accused pleaded with him to let him go, as he said he had no money to fight the case. When he arrested the accused witness was of the opinion that Sabo was intoxicated to such an extent as to be unfit to drive a car.
