GIRL GUIDES

TWENTY-FIRST BIRTHDAY CELEBRATED AT WAIPAWA The twenty-first anniversary of the birth of the Girl Guide movement was celebrated in Waipawa by the planting of a tree in the Domain on Saturday afternoon. There was not a very large attendance, due no doubt, f o the strong counter-attraction on Coronation Park but the proceedings were full of interest. Mr A. E. .Tull, M.P.. briefly traced the history of the movement, and outlined the many aspects of usefulness w’hich it covered. He expressed the hope that the tree which was to be planted would prove a flourishing symbol of the development of the Guide movement throughout the world. Mr Jull then filled in the first spadeful and each Girl Guide assembled added her quota. Then followed a special commemoration ode, and proceedings closed with the singing of the National Anthem. CELEBRATION AT OTANE TREE PLANTED IN DOMAIN The twenty-first anniversary of the Girl Guide movement throughout the world was celebrated at Otane by the local Guides in tree-planting on Saturday afternoon in glorious sunshine. A large - crowd of spectators witnessed the ceremony. A pink chestnut tree

was planted in the Domain. The Guides formed up in horse-shoe formation with the Union Jack in the centre, and the Brownies in their dancing circle. The Cubs were there under the leadership of Miss Warren. Mrs R. H. Tod, president of the Waipawa executive committee, read a letter of greetings from Miss McHardy, deputy provincial commissioner, which was followed bv a speech from Mr R. H. White (Pc'angata county representative). M ' Tod then placed the first spade of r vrth on the tree, Captain Hanna of '.he Otane Glides, plac-

ing the second, the remainder of earth being added by the Leaders, Guides, and Brownies in rotation, Captain Hanna inviting Mrs White, president o.f the local committee, and Miss Warren, cub mistress, to complete the planting of the tree, which was concluded by cheers and the singing of the National Anthem.

On Saturday morning the Girl Guides met at the residence of Captain Hanna,

where they baked and iced three cakes for St. Hilda’s Home this being the Guides’ act of service during their birthday week. They also cleaned the Otane War Memorial, and at 2.30 on Saturday afternoon they formed up while one of their members, Lorna White, placed on it a beautiful wreath, which was the work of a Boy Scout, Master Ewen Hanna.

On Sunday evening a special service was held in St. James’ Church, when all Guides and Brownies were present. The Rev. R. T. Hall gave a most appropriate sermon on "Service.”
