AUSTRALIAN TEAM DEFEATED By Telegraph —Copyright —Press Assn. PHILADELPHIA, May 28. The final round of the Davis Cup tennis matches in the North American zone was played at the Philadelphia County Club between United States and Australia.

The outcome was a win for the United States, the results being as follow: — Singles. F. X. Shields (U.S.A.) beat H. O. Hopman (Australia), 6 —4, 6 —l, 6—2. E. Vines (U.S.A.) defeated J. C. Crawford (Australia), 6 —2, 6 —4, 2 —6, 6 —4. Doubles. Van Ryn and Allison defeated Crawford and Hopman, 6 —o, 6 —4, 5 —7, 7 —5. SHIELDS DEFEATS HOPMAN By Telegraph —Copyright —Press Assn. PHILADELPHIA, May 27. Before the Davis Cup elimination matches commenced the Australian Press Association asked Mr. Sam Hardy, of the American Davis Cup committee, and Mr. Clemen ger, manager of the Australian team, for an expression of opinion on the condition of their respective teams. Mr. Hardy, interestingly enough, was full of praise for the Australians and said that on basis of both teams’ showing during practice there was nothing to choose between them.

“While it is not likely,” he said, “I should not. be surprised if either team won five straight matches they are so on top of their form.” Mr. Clemenger reiterated that the Australians were fit, saying: “We have one of the world’s greatest players. I expect the matches to be hard-fought.”

Shields defeated Hopman, 6 —4, 6—l, 6—2.

Rain and wind halted play for the day, when Vines was leading Crawford, g —2, 6 —4, S 2 —6. The fourth set stood at three all when play stopped.
