THEFT CHARGES

£5OO IN STOCK PALMERSTON N. BURGLARIES Numerous burglaries in the city' some resulting in the loss of hundreds of pounds’ worth of goods, recently caused citizens of Palmerston North some anxiety. The police department, however, metaphorically wiped the. slate clean in the Magistrate's Court yesterday, when five 1 men appeared on 22 charges of theft involving £561 17s 3d worth of articles. One of these, a youth, was dealt with in the Juvenile Court, the. remainder being heard summarily on several charges, and, on others, being committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. A young girl, for receiving stolen goods from those charged, was also dealt with and received two years’ probation. The cases involved a lengthy sitting of the Court, the summary counts being heard by Magistrate J. L. Stout, while the indictable offences came before Messrs. W. G. Ashworth and J. T. Bosworth, J’sP. In all nearly 20 witnesses were called and testified in regard to the breaking and entering of the Manual Training Centre, W. Archer's shop, F. Johansen’s shop, H. J. Kjar’s store (twice), Northern Club pavilion, Takaro clubhouse (twice), the Ohau Post Office, Bill Bros.’ store at Otaki, H. Weir’s shop, W. Franks’ shop, Ross and Glendinning’s warehouse, Russell Street School, the Standard Brewery, Sargood and Sons’ warehouse and the Esplanade tea kiosk. The accused were Cyril and Sherlock Anderson, a jockey, aged 21, and butcher, aged 25, respectively; William Francis Trembath, sawmill, hand, aged 19, and William Richard Dickson, a plasterer, aged 26 years. Another youth, as stated, appeared in the Juvenile Court on account of his age, being jointly charged there with theft from 'the Takaro clubhouse. Cyril and Sherlock Anderson were faced with two joint charges, Trembath with six charges, Cyril and Sherlock Anderson and Trembath jointly on seven charges, Cyril Anderson and Trembath jointly on six charges, Dixon and Cyril and Sherlock Anderson on one charge. The stolen goods included clothing, mercery, fur goods, bedding, boot polish, laces, bootmakers’ appliances, foodstuffs, cigarettes, tobacco, tinned goods, crockery, matting ,pen nibs, groceries, confectionery, a travelling rug, fruit, suitcases, rugs, watches, toilet requisites, celluloid articles, ladies’ hand-bags, carpenters’ tools, cutlery, lawn-mowers, a medical cabinet, typewriters, bacon, bowls, bags, a bicycle, gramophone, pencils, a barrel bar, cordials, sta-> tionery and a .small amount of cash.
