CHRISTCHURCH STRIKE
Two Contentious Points UNION PREVAILS IN BOTH NIGHT SERVICE MAINTAINED (Per Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night, A meeting of the tribunal which is to investigate the tramways dispute was held this morning, but the business was confined to a discussion of the procedure. Difficulty first arose on tho question of whether the chairman, Mr Donnelly, should have the right to a casting vote. However, the board at length withdrew its objection on this point, which threatened a serious deadlock. Mr Donnelly will therefore have voting powers and will .in effect, be the arbitrator.
Afore trouble arose on the question of the appearance of counsel. The board wished to bo represented by their own solicitor; also that counsel should appear at the board’s expense representing the volunteer workers. On this point also the union successfully resisted the board’s demand. Detonator on Lines To-night a restricted service of trams was being run. Elaborate precautions had been taken to ensure tho safety of passengers and tram crews. All windows and entrances of cars wrnre covered with fine mesh wire netting giving a bird-cage effect. Every car carried uniformed and temporary police, and there were motor car patrols of police following the cars. The last cars left at 8.20 p.m.
Two detonators were placed on the tramline at the Victoria street bridge and were fired by a car whine passed over them. People alighten apparently scared when the tram stopped, but no damage was done.
