INNER HARBOUR

AB YESTERDAY’S FOllffiC

MAJORITY IN OPPOSITION

FOR FIRST TIME 20 YEARS

(Per Press Association)

NAPIER, This Day.

Considerable interest was taken in the Harbour Board Election yesterday when’ every Inner Harbour supporter was defeated.

As a result of the earthquake the bed of the harbour was raised six feet and since then the Tutaekuri River, bearing silt from the fractured hills, has raised the land above the water level, practically all over the Inner Harbour.

This is the first time for over 20 years that there has been a majority on the board opposed to the further pursuance of the Inner Harbour Scheme.

CHANGES IN PERSONNEL

Changes in the personnel of the Napier Harbour Board as an outcome of the Hawke’s Bay county elections yesterday will result in considerable opposition to the policy of the old board. There now remain only three out of eight adherents of the old policy, and in view of the support accorded by the Hawke’s Bay county ratepayers yesterday the opposition’s voting strength has been increased from six—as it stood prior to the recent appointments —to nine out of the fourteen seats. Polling results:—Gordon 702; Harris 667; Barker 6"57 (elected), Joll 414; Jones 335; and Anderson 310. Party Allegiance Of the board’s membership of fourteen, only three old members still support the former harbour policy. Members and their party allegiance are as follow: — Inner Harbour Support A. E. Jull J. Baker G. C. Lowe Opposition P. F. Higgins J. C. Bryant T. Al. Geddis L. Stevenson E. J. Herrick J. I. Cato H. R. Peacock L. E. Harris T. L. Gordon J. Barker R. McLean HAWKE’S BAY COUNTY ALSO RIVERS BOARD Mr. N. P. Eriksen was defeated in the poll for the Meeanee riding of the Hawke's Bay County by Mr. Dooney. There, was no very noticeable margin between the candidates except at Meeanee, where Mr. Dooney resides. Here Air Eriksen polled only 17 votes against his opponent's 87. At Greenmeadows, however, Air. Eriksen polled 52 votes against his opponent’s 12. Air. Dooney’s majority was 35.
