Australia’s Birth Rate
According to a statement issued recently by the acting Commonwealth Statistician, the natural increase of 61,949 in the population of the Commonwealth for 1931 was low, compared with the average annual natural increase of 76,000 since the 1921 census. At December 31, the estimated population was 6,525,921 (3,324,288 males and 3,201,633 females). It was stated that since the last census a falling birth rate (and a death rate falling not quite so rapidly) has resulted in a steady de-
clining rate of natural increase, which, however, still compares favourably with those of other countries. The rate of natural increase for 1931 was 9.5 per thousand of mean population. The fourth quarter of 1931 with a natural increase of only 13,411 (18,219) shows the lowest figures for the fourth quarter for over 20 years.
