GAMES IN CENTRAL H.B.

COMMENCEMENT OF THE SEASON

Weather conditions were decidedly not of the best on Saturday for the official commencement of the cricket season throughout Central Hawke’s Bay. Conditions were in favour of bowlers, one of whom,«a boy named Mullindcr, performed the "hat trick” when playing junior grade for Takapau against. Old Boys at Takapau. The most outstanding batting performance, and incidentally the third highest in comparison with Napier and Hastings, on that afternorn, was put up by A. S. Wilder, who, playing very effective cricket compiled 72 not out. Last year’s champions, Old Boys, received a shock at Pukehou, when they suffered a very decisive beating at the hands of the Te Aute College team, which proved itself more than a match for the visitors, and won by ten wickets. ! EPARAIMA v. WAIPAWA WILDER IN FORM This match was played at Waipawa, and resulted in the best batting of the afternoon. Going to the wickets first, Waipawa made the moderate total of 101, of which O’Halloran got 24, Petherick obtained 15, Cox 14, Stephens 15 and Smith 23. For Eparaima, the wickets were fairly evenly divided amongst A. S. Wilder, J. McLean, J. Douglas and P. Canning. i Eparaima made 175 for five wickets, the principal scorers being A. S. Wilder 72, not out, J. McLean 33, C. F. Hartland 20, J. Douglas 22.

At Takapau, on a bumpy pitch the Old Boy junior eleven played the Takapau team, the game being productive of some fair individual scoring. A light drizzling rain, which fell intermittently throughout the afternoon, made the pitch slow and the outfield soggy. Old Boys took first stand at the wickets and produced a first innings total of 104 runs, making good use of the opposition bowling. A. Wilson was the best individual batsman, running up a tally of 26 runs before being dismissed by Mullinder. Other batsmen with double figure totals were:—Polhill 23, Monteith 13, and Reidy 15. Takapau were dismissed after a short stay at the wickets for 42, only one man reaching double figures, Ellingham, who compiled 13. Old Boys collapsed in the second innings for a meagre 25, the Takapau bowling upsetting the visitors badly. Following are the details: —
