Waipukurau County

MONTHLY COUNCIL MEETING

RESUME OF BUSINESS

The monthly meeting of the Waipukurau County Council was held on Saturday morning, the chairman, Mr. A. C. Russell, presiding over Councillors L. M. Monckton, J. H. Kibblewhite, C. Chalmers, A. W. Elliott, W. T. Edgecombe, W. J. Edgecombe, J. A. F. Swinburn, M. Tansey, and Mr. R. B. Price (en-gineer-clerk ). Request for a Road Mr. J. K. Sim, Hatuma, wrote advising that he intended building a house on a portion of Messrs Sim Bros’, property in the Purimu riding and asked that the council undertake the formation of about seven chains of road so as to give a reasonable access.

The engineer, by means of a map showed the area to be a portion of the old Purimu road, near where it joined with the Ngahape road before the new road went through. The job could be done with the grader, provided Mr. Sims would do the ploughing. The total cost would be about £l6 including a small culvert. On the motion of Cr. Swinburn, seconded by Cr. W. T. Edgecombe it was decided to authorise the work to be carried out.

Heavy Traffic Fees

The Hawke’s Bay County Council forwarded a statement showing the allocation of heavy traffic fees for the year ended March 31st, 1930. The share of fees for the Waipukurau County was shown as £250 6s 6d, less £Bl 14s already received, leaving a balance of £l6B 12s 6d, for which sum a cheque was attached. In reply to the chairman the engineer said that in his opinion the present system of paying the fees was quite satisfactory. If the fees were paid quarterly it would only involve extra work.

The chairman said that he thought the boroughs were receiving too great a proportion of the fees, especially as borough roads did not get the knocking about that the county roads received. Still it did not seem to be much use complaining. The traffic fees helped considerably with maintenance charges.

Main Highway Bridges

The No. 5 District Highways Council forwarded a circular letter in respect to the inspection and maintenance of Main Highway bridges and attached a form to be returned showing the . bridges in the

county. The engineer said that there were two bridges on the Porangahau road which would be involved. The matter was referred to the engineer with power to act.

Tour of Highways Board

The District Highways Council wrote advising that the Main Highways Board would arrive at Waipukurau at 2.30 p.m. on Friday, November 21st and would meet representatives of the Waipukurau and Patangata Councils and the Waipukurau Borough Council at the time

stated. The chairman said that he w r ould like as many councillors as possible to attend and take part in what discussion might arise.

Tender for Paddock

Mrs. C. Davies, Hatuma wrote stating that her lease of the council’s paddock on the Gorge road had expired, and as the price of butter-fat had fallen considerably during the past two yearfe and on account of that an offer of £8 was submitted for the grazing rights during the next twelve months. The chairman said that the council realised the position and he felt sympathetic to granting the request. After a brief discussion it was resolved, on the motion of Cr. Tansey, seconded by the chairman to accept the offer of £8 for the ensuing twelve months. Armistice Day The Acting Prime Minister (Hon. E. A. Ransom) forwarded a copy of a cablegram from the Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs advising that His Majesty had approved of arrangements for the observance of Armistice Day on November 11th being on the same as in previous years, and the council was asked to arrange accordingly. Received and referred to clerk. Tenders Three tenders for constructing a 64 chains drain on the Porangahau road were received, and that of Mr. J. B. Rice, Hatuma, at 4/6 a chain was accepted.
