Automobile Union
REGULATIONS CRITICISED ALLOCATION OF FINES CARTERTON, To-day. The annual meeting of the North Island Motor Union opened at Carterton to-day, delegates being present from Auckland, Wanganui, Wellington, Napier, Taranaki, and South Taranaki Automobile Clubs.. ■ ! h< The delegates were welcomed by the Deputy-Mayor, Mr G. Hughan, after which the business commenced. Mr A. J. Toogood (president), in his address, covered the ground of the recent regulations, deploring the fact that the Government had not acceded to the motorists’ request that it be compulsory for all vehicles to carry a red rear light. He regretted that the petrol tax had been fixed at 4d instead of 2d, as suggested by the Union, and said he considered that th© new motor regulations should over-ride all previous by-laws, especially regarding speed. He thought that the local bodies pursued motor- ' ists with unnecessary vigilance, so many trivial actions being taken against them, also that fines so collected should not go to local bodies, but to the Main Highways Board, for expenditure on roads.
