FARM SCHOOL.
® HOWARD BEQUEST.
The apathy of the local bodies concerned led to no vote being taken at yesterday’s conference in Hastings on the adoption or rejection of the report of the committee set up to consider the suitability of different properties for a farm school under the Howard Bequest. The report presented by the committee considered the Smedley Estate unsuitable, for various specified reasons, ami .favoured the property of Mr A. V. Collins, at Otanc, consisting of .1770 acres. Fifteen local bodies were concerned, and each was entitled to two representatives. Only eight of the bodies were represented, and fourteen out of the thirty reprsentatives were present. The chairman ruled that no vote could be taken.
The chairman, said that the Collins Estate was thoroughly suitable. Whatever. happened, the school must pay its way, and the committee thought that if the Collins Estate and Smedley were worked together, a much more handsome profit-would be shown than from Smedley alone. In reply to a question the chairman stated that the price for the Collins Estate was £4O per acre. Mr M. Tanscy (Waipukurau County) said that he considered this price very high.
