News was' received in Waipawa on Tuesday of the death of an old Waipawa boy, Mr Stewart Annand, which occurred at Wairoa on Monday. The deceased was for many years engaged on the staff of the “Waipawa Mail.”
The annual district conference of the Foresters Order is to take place at Napier on Wednesday. The Waipukurau Lodge will be represented by P.C.R. Bro. J. Cochrane and P.C.R. Bro. F. N. McVicar as District Sub. Chief Ranger, and Chief elect, Bro. E. G. Dowrick, will also be present.
The Waipukurau Chamber of Commerce was represented by Mr P. J. Marfell at the conference of representatives of farming organisations and local bodies, held in Hastings yesterday as concerning the proposed farm school for Hawke’s Bay. An apology was tendered for the unavoidable absence of the President of the Chamber (Mr. J. E. Hall).
At the annual meeting of householders, held last night, very complimentary reference was made as to the service rendered by Mr J. H. Hindman, who is an energetic and efficient secretary of the District High School Committee. He has held office for the past four years. Mr W. G. Bryce, the reelected chairman, has enjoyed the confidence of the Committee for a lengthy period.
On Tuesday death claimed another of the old residents of Waipawa, in the person of Mrs Breuer, states the Waipawa “Mail.” She had not been well for some time, but pneumonia supervened on an attack of influenza and her constitution failed to resist the attack. The late Mrs Breuer had been a resident of the district for 52 years, and in the course of that period made many warm and lasting friendships by kindly courtesy. She was predeceased by her husband about 20 years ago. She leaves a grown up family, the members of which arc Mrs D. Annand, Mrs J. H. Harris (both of Napier), Mrs A. Lambert (Porangahau), and Mr A. Breuer (Hastings). Four brothers arc among the mourners, viz., Messrs L. Hemmingsen (of Welling,ton), P. Hemmingsen (Shannon). H. Hemmingsen (Wanganui), and C. Hemmingsen (Waipawa).
Prior to the legal offices closing for the Easter vacation Mr W. Parker, Clerk of the- Waipawa and Waipukurau S.M. Courts,, who leaves Waipawa. this week on transfer to Christchurch, was met.by members of the profession and others associated with him in his work and presented with a cheque with which to purchase a souvenir of. his stay in Waipawa. Mr R. H. Wcdde, as spokesman, voiced the general regret felt at Mr Parker’s approaching departure, paid tribute to the zeal and courtesy with which he discharged his official duties, and wished he and Mrs Parker much happiness in their new home.- Suitable acknowledgement was made by the recipient of the gift. Mr Parker is both an efficient and obliging officer, and will bo greatly missed from our midst.
