MISSISSIPPI FLOOD.

GREAT DEVASTATION.

(Received this day, 11.27 a.m.) NEW YORK, April 21.

Thousands of , men have been conscripted to brave the storm sweeping down the Mississipi Valley, advancing on the crest of the greatest flood in the history of the river, and strengthen dykes which have so far protected the Southern lowlands.

Half the section of a railway bridge over the Arkansas River, at Littlerock, was carried away, with a rockladen train.

It is said that hundreds of families will be drowned within the next few hours unless rescued.

It is estimated that there are 160 dead.- The gravity of the flood and cyclonic conditions is increasing.
